I've heard a few people say he was burned to death, along with the Hyenas. But it seems quite obvious to me that he was eaten alive.

But in the beta, wasn't he burned or something?

I think it's obviously the hyenas, judging from how they all ganged up on him and we saw the shadows of them starting to go nuts all over him...

In the alternate ending, Scar defeated Simba and was consumed by the flames that engulfed Pride Rock ^^
And how Scar died in the film?
I assumed he was attacked by the hyenas, but also swallowed up by the flames

It's basically implied that Scar was eaten by the very creatures who he had allied with in the very beginning, which is irony at its finest if you ask me. ^^ I don't think that anyone was burned alive though, seeing as the hyenas were dumb, but probably not dumb enough to stick around to be cooked alive by the flames and it's mentioned that the hyenas ran off in TLK2SP, so I believe that the fire was just there from the lightning strikes and to make the scene seem more intense. ^^

I believe Scar was devoured by the hyenas when he fell from the rock.
