Now, here's a thought, there's a widely rampant fan theory that scar and the hyenas were childhood friends. that they were buddies. that they were pals. WERE THEY?? :o

In the Introduction to Be Prepared on The Lion King Special Edition Sound Track Scar says
"I never thought Hyena's essential,
they're crude, and unspeakably plain.
maybe they've a glimmer of potential,
If alligned to my vison and brain."

Such a description hardly seems apt for his "friends" but then, is this really the face of a loyal friend? http://www.mylionking.com/resources/sit ... ab_308.jpg looks like he's saying eew to me. :lol2:

Well, Scar never was one for friendly conversation after all. lol. :) It's pretty clear that the hyenas and Scar do know each other though, from the scene just before the whole Be Prepared sequence, so that tends to lead us to believe that yes, they might have been friends or at least, something to that degree.

The books prove that he hanged out with the hyenas a teen too. He most likely met them as cubs when he was still young and innocent, that's why he would still call them his friends.

Plus, aren't those lyrics deleted from the normal song?

This theory may possibly hold some truth. After all, don't Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed seem to be Scar's top henchmen? Plus the small dialogue before the song Be Prepared seems to suggest that Scar has been catching food for the hyenas for a long time. But as KM put it, Scar was never one for friends. They are more like allies or servants to him, especially if he was willing to turn against them so easily.

well, he's known them since his adolescent definitely. in TLK6NA book Tale of Two Brothers they interact some. but from what I can tell, they hadn't had a very lengthy friendship at that point. so most likely when Taka/Scar became the angsty teenager jealous of his brother and angry at his father, he ended up befriending the hyenas. it also seems that from their conversation at one point, he was the one who came to them.

I personally think they're the reason he became the villian we know. in that book, Taka/Scar was ambitious and jealous but not evil. his plan to make Mufasa look bad was to simply do better than him on their hunt. it was Shenzi and the hyenas who suggested that he got even instead. they were who he went to when things went wrong, an audience who would put up with his complaints. but they encouraged him to use different methods to solve his problems than he otherwise would've taken. so I think that it was a friendship, just not one that Scar would likely admit to anyone else....and he seems to find their antics annoying or stupid rather than amusing. but I think they were sorta friends, just not the most solid of friendships.

and let's not forget, at the end that Scar greeted them after he had been flung off Pride Rock, "Ah, my friends."

Like Simba mentioned, we learn from TLK6NA Two Brothers that Scar knew the Hyenas as a teenager. My guess is that he befriended them around that stage in his life.
I don’t think he was ever really their friend, though. In TLK especially, they act as Scar’s servants/helpers. He gives them orders and rewards them with food when they have completed them. It seems like the Hyenas respects him (they bow down to him when she shows up in the Be Prepared scene) but it doesn’t seem like they are friends. Their relationship is more servant/master.

I'd say that the only reason Scar made use of the hyenas at all is because he knew them, and had feelings for them in his own twisted way. Otherwise why even give them a position in the pridelands? He could have won the lionesses loyalty himself, as he was the rightful heir after all.
