Should Rafiki have suspected Scar was up to something?

Just for the sake of starting a fresh topic, I've been thinking about this for a while. After being told upfront that Mufasa and Scar were dead (with no questions asked), the lionesses and Rafiki accept the king and prince are dead. Fast forward some years later, Rafiki smells Simba's scent, and realizes Simba is alive. After being told that Simba was dead, should Rafiki have suspected that Scar wasn't really telling the truth? That he was up to something?

It's also important to note that Rafiki is somehow able to communicate with Mufasa, even though he's dead.

I'm just going to call it a plothole and leave it at that.

I have no doubt Rafiki put two and two together when he figured out Simba was alive. Though it's obvious he didn't act on it, if he did it would have undermined the rest of the movie :P

Maybe he meant to tell everyone, but had a big dauby-wall arty exhibition thing to prepare for?

Could he not have assumed that Scar assumed that Simba had died too? Or maybe he does then realise that Scar is a bad guy, but puts his efforts into reaching Simba? Possibly he would not have been safe in the Pridelands any more delivering the truth to the lionesses?

I don't think he told any other lionesses, both Sarabi and Nala were surprised to see Simba alive. I like the idea that he put all of his effort into looking for Simba though.

Yeah, I meant, it was a reason he wouldn't have told any lionesses.. ^^

Say that Rafiki realized what really happened. If the lionesses believed him then Scar would have sicced the hyenas on him.

Interesting plot hole, though.

^ Or the similar sentiment, what the heck was an 80 year old baboon going to do against a seasoned lion? Why WOULD he go back to the Pridelands for BUT NOTHING, rather than find another full grown lion to go fight a full grown lion?

Rafiki's eccentric, he's not wacked :P

As for the being in communication with Mufasa thing being a plot-hole......I think this is one of the very SOREST things about the subtlety & beauty of the first one that the sequel Simba's Pride totally degrades and destroys.

In the first Lion King, there really isn't any indication that Rafiki ever communicates with Mufasa himself at all. Rafiki scents that Simba is alive, finally sees a solution to the Pridelands problem and just happy-joy, goes to find him to fight his fight, and Simba balks. So Rafiki conjures Mufasa. Rafiki never addresses Mufasa himself, neither discarnately to gossip OR the large manifestation, his speech is only ever with living Simba. Mufasa has his own things to say and while they may serve Rafiki's purpose, they are meant for his son.

In SP......Mufasa pops up like damn jack-in-the-box in SP and apparently has Rafiki on speed-dial via a Bluetooth earpiece or something because they're always friggin talking to each other chatting and only Rafiki can hear him.

Mufasa's appearance in the clouds was brilliantly & exquisitely handled in the first one, it wasn't a plothole at all until they cobbled together a ridiculously contrived, horrendously conceived ruinous lame/craptastic sequel.

...I THINK I'm done now, LOL.

I'm Very surprised not much has been discussed about if Rafiki would've already known something was up with Scar, as soon as the hyenas started walking onto Pride Rock in this scene. Isn't it quite obvious seeing that many hyenas practically walking into the Pride lands from all directions, would not be seen as "normal" to Rafiki? I mean, he did notice them coming in. Right?
(Unless, that's exactly what cleargreenwater was metaphorically pointing out just above my reply)

Only thing though in the LK universe, it's gotta be an invisible type Bluetooth device in Rafiki's head. So yeah, he's definitely got an advantage over other TLK characters. Bad thing about it though, it's gotta be radiating his brain like at a million times more per day than a standard microwave can do. Image
