His dad dies, and he realizes that there's more to being king than getting his way all the time.

And he just plain grows up--for that matter when I was 8 I'd run around yelling happy havoc when my mother would tell me we were going to the amusement park, now I hear Six Flags and I start thinking "Hour drive, $40 gas, $20 parking, $60 entrance, $10 hamburgers inside the gate..." and how I can sneak a bottle of water in so I don't have to pay an arm for one.

Yeah like other's were saying earlier, he grew up and became adult. So he kinda "forgot" about his dreams and how great king he would become. Also wasn't Simba a little bratty when he was young?
