I got such an enthusiastic response from my sharing of Lion King newspaper clippings that I decided to go back and see if I could find any others. I came across several that might interest you.


Printed July 5th, 1994. The first half discusses the career of Matthew Broderick's up to that point. The second half gets an insight into the recording of Simba. I hope everyone can see the picture of him, but I'm thinking most of you can't. If you want to see it, you can go to my Photobucket account or just imagine a lead singer of an 80s hair band. I also thought that caption was funny: "Matthew Broderick: He's Simba in The Lion King"


Nothing really new here. Notice how it correctly predicts the box office smash that Lion King was. If you can't read the last three columns, I have it below as well.


Anyone else craving a "commemorative candy bar" right now?

John Hayes tells it like it is. Best line: "I'd also like to express the pity I carry for Chethik's children or future children. They are going to miss one hell of a movie."


Thoughtful insight from Sarah. I had to edit this article's layout because it was nearly three times long as it was tall. I wanted to make sure everyone could read it.


I thought this was interesting. It came from the newspaper's review of Anastasia. Notice how the critic gets the date of Lion King's release incorrect. He says it was released in 1993. when it was 1994. The worst part is that this was printed in 1997: Just three years later.

Look closely at the lion's name. Not exactly Lion King, but interesting. I love the woman's quote at the end

I remember the story of Nala the escaped Lioness, I was worried that the Police would have to put her down if they could not catch her. I was very happy when she was captured alive.

These articles were great, and I was very pleased that some people spoke in defense of the Lion King when it was attacked. I also greatly appreciate you providing zoomed in versions of the articles. Thanks Noahcs

Thanks again, Noah, for the interesting newspaper clippings. I do remember hearing that The Lion King was critized for gender and racial stereotypes, and the story of an escape lioness named Nala is new to me.

However, I still can't get over that the movie was thought of as having an original storyline as Disney promoted it as. But, I agree with John Horn's article that the movie is very remenscient of Hamlet, the Old Testament, Greek mythology, and classic hero mythology. In 2003, the original filmmakers stated those stories did inspire TLK.
