In the scene of Simba's nightmare, Kovu is seen dangling Simba off a clip like Scar did with Mufasa. This is before Kovu has a scar right? Well look at this screengrab
Image
Is it a mistake or just symbolizing how much Kovu was alike Scar?

no, I don't believe it was a mistake. Maybe a little foreshadowing. Plus it was a dream, and it was to Simba that Kovu was no different than Scar, Simba decided that the second he met Kovu, before giving him any chance to prove himself. Plus in the dream it was Scar turning Into Kovu, so the scar just makes sense to be there. Simba had deep fears of Kovu being like his uncle, and those fears were played out in his nightmares.

I believe as well that it wasn't a mistake but that Kovu was given the scar, to symbolize how Simba felt about Kovu's similarities to Scar.

Most likely forced similarities of Kovu and Scar. So the scar is purely a figure of Simba's imagination at this point.

Like everyone else has said it was a dream, The dream also showed how Simba transferred his mistrust of Scar to Kovu.

Yeah, I agree with pretty much everyone who has commented on this topic, that it is because of Simba's mistrust of Kovu because he is Scar's heir, and Kovu and Scar have close physical attributes, so that's why the scar is there. And, it may also be a little foreshadowing.

I agree, it was Simba's mistrust of Scar transferred to Kovu in the dream. It may have also been foreshadowing.

I think it is significant to note that when Kovu shows up back in the Pridelands after receiving his scar, it added to how bad he looked to Simba and the rest of the Pride when he was exiled.

I agree with everyone else, it was added as foreshadowing. Simba associates scars, with Scar(obviously), and his fathers death so the dream was a culmination of all his worst nightmares.

Foreshadowing, I think.
Also, Simba was convinced Kovu was like Scar, and was going to follow in his pawprints. The way Scar morphs into Kovu is heavily symbolic, showing Simbas fear and distrust.. he was convinced Kovu was exactly like Scar, and couldn`t be trusted.
