I read on another forum that the filmmakers intented to have Simba tell Timon and Pumbaa that his father is dead and that it's all his fault, when they asked what he'd done, and Timon then say "Wow, you do have a dark past."

Even though Simba, in the final film, stated he didn't want to talk about his dark past, but let's say you are in the filmmakers's shoes, so which you would prefer: that Simba tells about his past or the way his past remains a secret until Nala tells them?

I liked the movie how it was.

The whole point of Hakuna Matata is that the past doesn't matter. Timon and Pumbaa did ask what happened, but not receiving an answer was perfectly acceptable to them. If you don't want to talk about it, the don't! Hakuna Matata!

If anything, them pestering Simba into telling them would be a violation of their lifestyle.

Since Hakuna Matata means "no worries", then, why did Pumbaa bother telling Simba about their problems in the film? Simba didn't ask them when he himself didn't want to tell his troubles. In a deleted scene, Timon tells about his worries, and how he came across Hakuna Matata.

I only started this forum because I thought the idea of whether Simba should have told them or not was pretty interesting.

I think Timon and Pumbaa only told Simba about their worries just so they could teach him about Hakuna Matata, not because they really wanted to share their worries with him.

I believe that it was better story-wise that Simba didn't tell Timon and Pumbaa about his past, he wanted to forget what had happened and he though Hakuna Matata could help him achieve that. In actuality all it really did was cause the pain and guilt Simba had inside to eat at him slowly from the inside. While Simba acted like he was living a carefree life, he was suffering in silence. There is no telling how bad things might have gotten for Simba (Emotionally) had Nala not shown up and forced him to face the emotions he had been trying to bury behind Hakuna Matata.

I like the film how it was.

I personally think Simba should have. Regardless if it really matters in their hakuna matata lifestyle or not. It hurt him more when Nala came back because of the fact that he did not tell anyone else about it before that event. And this is exactly what happens when a person chooses to not tell anyone in their life about their problems. Not because Timon and Pumbaa made him forget about it and cause him more pain later on. It was Simba himself, who chose not to do so.

I mean, Timon and Pumbaa brought Simba in and was with them for quite some time before Nala found him. He obviously shared a big bond with Timon and Pumbaa. So realistically, it would only be right to let them know. Especially out of sincere trust and companionship.

I guess he didn't tell them because:

a) He wanted to escape any judgement from them (as he was already judging himself pretty harshly), and maybe he was worried that they would be disgusted and he'd lose them as friends. An escape is exactly what the jungle was.

b) He might've been worried that they'd try and persuade him to return too? (Long shot that one, I know.)
