Missed Opportunity?

You remember in Simba's nightmare where Simba is hanging on the cliffs seeing Mufasa dangling on the cliff with the wildebeest stampede right below him ready to sweep him away to his death. Simba tries to save him by reaching for his paw, but Scar who morphs into Kovu throws him off the cliff. :(

Fast forward to after the Outsiders have "converted", Kiara is dangling off the edge of the cliffs, with a raging river right below her ready to sweep her away to her death. When Simba went to save Kiara, the river "stops" afterwards and Kiara and Simba just walk up... somehow. Now how about the river is still going on and Simba has trouble trying to save Kiara. So when Simba grabs Kiara's paw, Simba is about to fall or trip on the cliff. And then, Kovu helps him getting up.

If you have troubling trying to comprehend this, then, I try to break it down one more time. Simba successfully rescues his relative, Kiara, would have been a mirror to Simba unsuccessfully saving his relative, Mufasa in his nightmare. Except, instead of Kovu throwing Simba off the cliff, he helps him hang on the cliff so Simba can save his relative from sudden death. :-o

Personally, I think this was a missed opportunity to add depth into the story, and Kovu should have helped saved Simba save Kiara since he told Zira that he would never let her hurt Kiara.

The entire movie is a missed opportunity.. It could have been so much better, but SP's directors wanted their bucks fast. The movie could have been amazing if it wasn't so rushed. Akril made an excellent fan-fiction of the draft version of SP, which developed that scene you said. I suggest you go read it. ^^

I agree with Kopa23 ^^ And...what is the question here? Is it that Kovu should have saved Kiara instead of Simba? Lol :?

I agree, companies want their money quickly not with quality.

There is no question to be asked here; I was just making a suggestion. I had a feeling someone wouldn't comprehend what I wrote. Remember when Simba tried to save Mufasa in his nightmare, but he gets pushed by Kovu. Well, that scene kinda repeats itself in reality when Simba tries to save Kiara, so let's say he nearly slips, and Kovu, instead of pushing him off in his nightmare, actually lends a paw of support.

I felted it was a missed opportunity since Simba could realize that Kovu was a friend, and not an enemy as he believed he was in his nightmare.

Well, that's your opinion, but the movie was pretty good for my taste. True, it could have been better if it was made for a theatrical release so more thought would have put into it, and have better animation.

I think it would have been great if Simba saved Kiara, then Kovu helped Simba pull her up. It would certainly have added more depth to the movie. The way that scene is now, Kovu just stands by, helpless, doing nothing while his mother and his lover are tumbling down a cliff. Nice.

I believe that Kovu was in shock over the whole situation, thus why he didn't act immediately like Simba did. I also think a parent's instict to save his/her offspring from near death would be a lot stronger than that of Kovu and Kiara's bond, not to say that love isn't a powerful force, since it most certainly is, but I think parental instincts are stronger.

Despite how Kovu felt about his mother, it seems obvious to me that he didn't want to see her die. After the river washes out, there is a brief moment where we see Kovu. The expression on his face and his body language looks very regretful, or at least, to me it does. This leads me to believe that Kovu might have wanted to help his mother from falling to her supposed death, but that wouldn't have looked good in the eyes of the Pridelanders. I think the best thing he could have done, was to stay neutral, much like he did. I'm sure he had faith that Simba was more than capable of saving Kiara as well.

I also think that the last scene was to show how the entire conflict ended with Zira's death: no more Zira, no more conflict. Hence Kiara and Simba simply hop back to the top of the cliff without any trouble. While a very disappointing ending, I admit, I myself cannot think of a way to have either Kovu or Simba save Kiara and make the scenes flow together.

In short, my opinion is that the cliffhanging part in SP was written into a hole where the only workable solution is the disappointing one used in the movie.

I think it would have been better if-
Kiara doesn't jump in the way, Zira knocks Simba down. Simba tries to help Zira but the same thing happens (her dying) but then Simba can't get up and Kovu helps him. The scene would be all dramatic, having Simba uncertain about taking Kovu's paw and then Kovu would be like "Trust me, it's ok" and then Simba would smile and grasp his paw. It would have been awesome.
It would have made Simba show that he agrees with Kiara (we are one) by trying to help Zira, and it would have shown that Kovu was good (and the whole thing of him proving that he won't hurt him)
