Is Ed really stupid, or does he use it to mask intelligence? He might have had a traumatic experience that was so terrifying, he gave up his life to laughing stupidly. At least, that's what I've heard. So...

Only Ed knows. Unless he actually is stupid, so then he wouldn't know.

I believe he used to be the smartest of the three.. but got severe brain damage from a lion attack.

Based on the last scene, where Scar begs for the hyena's forgiveness, it is Ed that takes the initiative. So clearly, he is wiser than he looks. Could very well be a mask.

From what I've read, according to the film producers, Ed is either completely crazy or is smarter than he lets on and merely pretends to be crazy.

It's hard to say but I'd say chewing on your own leg would be going a bit far for a ruse.

Took the words right out of my mouth there. He's nowhere near as dumb as he seems throughout the film.

I think Ed is crazy. But not stupid. Far from stupid, in fact.

I never thought of Ed that way... But might be I was wrong. Maybe he just knows that it's much better for him not to talk while everyone else does. That means he might be the wisest of them all...
