Something I just noticed about big companies

Now, NetFlix just launched in the UK, and they are offering a free one month trial (you cancel within the month and do not get charged, or not do that and be charged like £6 a month) Its actually quite good for what it is, but that is not the point here.
I noticed in the terms and conditions
"BY AGREEING TO THESE TERMS YOU AGREE NOT TO BE ABLE TO SUE US AND GIVE UP YOUR RIGHT TO DEFEND YOURSELF!"
Sony have this as well in their terms and conditions, and like I was just thinking. I mean sure I agreed to it, but since when did it become okay for companies to do this? Its like saying "If anything goes wrong, you can not sue us!" I mean I understand that they are just protecting their selves but is it really acceptable that companies are allowed to do this?

Again, I mean its not really (that) big a deal for me, but I wandered what other people might think?

Doesn't MLK have a terms and conditions agreement when you register an account? ;) Just food for thought.

Yes it does but if you read what I said, its not the point.
The point is MLK is not a big company, and the terms govern how you use the site. But to limit your corporate responsibility to such a degree, especially when you are earning profit from the customers, and then just asking them to not excersise their right to defend themselves against you is very different.

Well, it's just a safety net. Corporations could go bankrupt if every person had the right to sue them. They have these conditions so they can focus on things other than their potential legal nightmares. They also allow corporations to do things they wouldn't normally do. For example, do you think phpBB would have their software available if they could get sued for what other people post using it?
The phpBB software only facilitates internet based discussions, the phpBB Group are not responsible for what we allow and/or disallow as permissible content and/or conduct.
Without it, this site may not exist. :O

You read the terms of agreement, you are the 1%

1% seems a bit optimistic, to me. I'd say 1 in 250, or 300.

That's not right. Anybody could be sued. I could be sued. That's just wrong.

lol. I don't mind that if sony says so, cuz it doesn't matter anyway if something goes wrong with my sony tv or whatever I own from sony, cuz you just give it back to retailer and get new tv back :P

It might be possible that they just want to look at making their company better, over somebody filing a lawsuit over every little problem. Netflix focus's a lot on you just giving them feedback.

As for Sony, I think they realized that, as Timba said, you can always just return the product if your not happy.
