It's only supposed to be a Category 1 hurricane. But HOLY CRAP, I am scared. :( People here are making such a big deal out of it. And apparently, the storm surge/flooding is going to cause far more damage than the high winds.
New York City is doomed though. The current location of the hurricane puts them directly in its trajectory. o.0

I live in Ohio. Back in 2008 we got what was left of a hurricane. What was left was hurricane force winds of up to 70 MPH sustained and gusts of about 80 MPH. It took down trees and power lines and that night you could hear transformers exploding as they tried to get the power back on. We were off for less than 24 hours, which was amazing considering it was the biggest outage this area had ever experienced. But in some places it took up to 3 weeks to get power restored.

Stay safe everybody. Hopefully by the time it gets to NYC it'll just be a big rain event and there won't be much wind.

Im in Florida and when Irene passed us I was walking on the street, we didn't even feel anything but a dreaded rain storm and a bighorn wind. Don't worry people of NY. I've beennin a cat 3. It isn't too bad without power for a few days, buy a fee boardgames three packs of batteries fill the tub with water and make sure you have like lots of cearell and if you have pets get like 100 dollars worth of food and water and toys and dog pads. And also have a first aid kit and make sure your windows are boarded also make sure that you have nothing hanging on your walls and have a few batterie operated fans it will get hot. And if it gets to bad lye down in your bathing suit or just a tee and shorts on tile floor, they are usually quite cool if no one is really on it much.

I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada and we're SUPPOSED to get a visit from Irene tomorrow. I'm not to worried though. Last year we had Hurricane Earl and that was breeze! We even went outside so the dog could pee haha!
It's funny how people are panicking though. According to my neighbours, Wal-Mart was insane cause people were buying a bunch of flashlights and bottled water and stuff like that.
If we lose power, we have made a deal with our neighbours that we will BBQ our food together. I doubt it will be too bad here in N.S.

I live on the East Coast, and where I am from, we freakin' lost our power for three days, and just got it back today at like 5 ish. Anyways, it was apparently gonna take a week to get all the damage fixed up, and the power back to everyone. BUT, we were grateful that Central Maine Power (CMP) fixed it today because while I was on the bus I was crossing my fingers..for good luck. But man, we couldn't do ANYTHING without power. I have no idea how the heck the people survived in the old days without it. I mean, now, our society is so domesticated and we rely on power so much.. that we can barely survive without it. My family ran out of money for food because our food in the fridge went bad, and we kept having to go to the grocery store for meals and stuff. We lived off of canned goods, because we couldn't cook anything. The bathroom stunk, I am not going into details about that though. -.-' Anyway, you get the idea. HUMANS=WAY TO RELIABLE ON POWER. :P I am so grateful we got it back.. lol

I live in New York, so the hurricane came to us on Saturday night into Sunday evening. During Saturday night, it was raining hard and that's all. Sunday was mostly about the winds, since it was so much wind coming and howled so much throughout the day. All day it was blowing wind at high speeds, but not high to cause major damage. I saw the trees being blown so much. Around that evening, the wind calmed down and stopped. I was glad by then. Now, everything's back to normal. Luckily, I didn't lose any power.

Agreed, we seriously need to go back to the old way of life, a life without completely relying on electricity or anything we can't naturally have, if that makes sense.

Anyway, I'm glad nothing too serious happened. I've heard that another hurricane is coming, though...

I was tracking this hurricane. Lucky it wasn't a high category. Another hurricane? I haven't heard about that one, when is it supposed to hit?
