Hmmm....interesting. I always use to listen to music when I was busy doing Assignments for my University Degree and I often shoved the radio on while making my film for my Masters. For some reason it helped me concentrate and calmed my nerves. So in a way I think some music or even some background noise can help when it comes to work :)

It depends on what you listen to. But for me it works...sometimes.

If I'm writing, listening to music at the same time doesn't help. It distracts me. I sometimes listen to music before I start writing though to kind of help me get in the right mood, and that tends to work.

When I write, I like to listen to whatever fits the scene, and at low volume so it's more like ambient noise. It's only distracting if it's loud.

My sister did a sort of "mini-study"of this for a school assignment a few years back.

She played my least favorite genre of music, and gave me sheets of math problems to do, and had a time limit.
Then, she let me try without any music, and then with music of my choosing.
Guess what?
I got more problems done when I listened to music of my choosing than without it.

So, I believe that it does.

Writing = Works for me. If I'm museless, it gives me the muse needed. [e.g. You're Gonna Go Far Kid makes a good battle scene]
Drawing = Amazing.
Anything else = Pleh.
