Drumming Hooves [One Shot]

[Authors Note: This is a quick oneshot I whipped up after making a graphic. It's a what-if story about Mufasa being unable to save Simba. It sucks, feeback appreciated~]

The distant thumping of hooves alerted the king’s Majordomo as they patrolled the Pridelands. Zazu remarked ‘Oh look Sire, the heard is on the move.’ and Mufasa turned to survey the scene, a large cluster of dirt could be sighted as the herd thudded through it from as far from the gorge they were. ‘Odd…’ He replied, knowing that the wildebeest had no intentions of leaving his land.

At that precise moment, the voice of his younger brother appeared from nowhere. ‘Mufasa, quick!’ the scrawny male puffed, his panic struck features contorted with what appeared to be fear. ‘Stamped! In the gorge! Simba’s down there!’ Mufasa’s eyes widened, and in a flash he was off.

Scar and Zazu becoming a blur beside him. The only thing that mattered was protecting his son. Adrenaline pushed him forward, faster than he had run in as long as he could remember, until he reached the dreaded gorge, fear of what he may see clouding his eyes. Zazu had flown ahead, and Mufasa and Scar scanned the gorge frantically for the young Prince. The hornbill returned, pointing the golden cub out, and the king saw his son dangling from a tiny branch, holding on for dear life. ‘Hold on, Simba!’The King cried out in fear and as he leaped down, the branch supporting the young cub snapped and the Simba screamed, falling into the rushing wildebeest below him. Mufasa rushed forward, twisting and turning, trying to find his son. Every second was vital. Mufasa was being pelted with the hard bodies and hooves of the wildebeest, but he didn’t notice the pain through the adrenaline. He couldn’t see his son anywhere, darting towards the broken tree, eyes on the ground.

He was knocked to the floor by one of the large beasts, and struggled to get up, his vision becoming blurry. Dread was filling his being as hoofed creatures thinned out. He searched, the pain striking him to his core as he saw a small, slumped, bloodied figure laying on the dirt mere feet away from him. Gasps and cries could be heard as his lionesses arrived seconds later. Everything was distorted, his sight… Even the scream of his mate as they both approached the lifeless body of their son.
