After rewatching the movie today I have quite a few thoughts

I decided to talk about my likes and dislikes for each character excluding sarafina and that gopher who had one line.

Starting with the antagonists.

Scar

I like scar as a villain, not just because he isn't afraid to kill but because he's a master manipulator. He manipulated young simba into going to the elephant graveyard. He manipulated young simba into believing that his fathers death was his own. He was able to manipulate the hyenas into doing his dirty work. The lionesses, and even mufasa he manipulated.

He's also lazy, but i don't believe that to be a bad thing. He had a childlike view of what it is to be a ruler. The same as young simba, believing that being a king had no responsibilities. A flawed, somewhat complex character.


What i don't like about scar is his design. It screams "i am evil" almost no subtlety at all, unlike his personality. Right away you can tell he's the bad guy. No ambiguity. Meh.


The hyena trio.

I like that they aren't bumbling henchmen. They are real threats, not being undone by their own incompetence but because mufasa was stronger, simba escaped because he was faster. They caused a wildebeast stampede without a hitch in their plans. They killed Scar after finding out that he had admitted what he really thought of them.

There isn't anything i really dislike about them. Other than the same complaint i had with scar. They could have been less blatantly evil in their designs.

I like ambiguity. The designs for the villains are anything but.

I'm not saying his design is boring or bad. It does have a stylish flair to it.
