In your opinion, what are the BEST Disney Sequels?

Postby PrincessKiara » July 17th, 2016, 3:56 pm

I thought it would be fun with a positive topic about Disney Sequels. True, some of them are horrible, but in my opinion most of them fall into the category of bland and forgettable. There are however several that I really enjoy and would recommend checking out - just because it`s a Disney sequel doesn`t mean it`s bad. :P

So here are my favourite Disney sequels (includes midquels, prequels, etc).

Bambi 2

This is a midquel, but if I`m judging all Disney sequels as one, this would come out on top for me, even above Simba`s Pride. It was produced by the main Disney studio, and so got a cinematic release. The animation is GORGEOUS, the soundtrack is good, the voice work is strong and the story fills in the mysterious gap from the original film between the death of Bambi`s mother and springtime when Bambi is all grown up. What happened during all that time?
This movie gives you the answers. It shows Bambi bonding with the father he`s never known, struggling with the rival/bully Ronno and developing a crush on Faline while also maintaining the strong friendship with Thumper and Flower. The main focus of the film is Bambi`s relationship with his father and how they`re both dealing with the grief after losing Bambi`s mother. It`s a very touching film, with both plenty of cuteness and humour but also strong emotions and good character development. I absolutely adore the original Bambi, it`s always been one of my favourite Disney movies, and this sequel is a good tribute to it. It`s naturally influenced by modern times, and the contrast between the older and newer films is a bit jarring in the very beginning, not to mention that Bambi 2 has tons more dialogue where the original relied on music and facial expressions to get emotions across. But again, it`s a product of newer times. In conclusion, if you haven`t seen this, check it out, I highly recommend it. And bring tissues. You`re gonna need it.

Mulan 2

While I certainly have some issues with this one, I still find it enjoyable overall and I say it`s worth a watch. This movie focuses on Mulan and Shang (along with their three army pals from the original) escorting three princesses (daughters of the emperor of China) to a different kingdom where they are meant to marry three princes to secure an alliance of peace between the two realms. The story raises the question of when you should follow your heart instead of doing your duty (and does not do it very well in my opinion) as well as dealing with the relationship between Mulan and Shang and if they`re really a good fit as a couple. In the middle of all this, Mushu is trying to sabotage Mulan and Shang and get them to break up as a way to serve his own selfish goal. (Not cool, dude.) There is also a romantic subplot which is really cute. What I like about this movie is that we get to see Mulan and Shang together, both as a couple and as co-workers, and they have to deal with their differences. The Chinese princesses are all interesting characters and we get to see the political side to royalty and how arranged marriages play a large part. Being a princess is certainly not all about wearing pretty dresses and singing to woodland creatures. The songs are for the most part good, the princesses song "I wanna be like other girls" especially is great. There`s also laughs to be had, the scene where Mushu plays with shadow puppets is really funny, and reminds me of the panda stunt he pulled in the first movie! So while opinions on this movie might be divided, and it does have its issues, I`d say overall it`s worth a watch. It`s far from the worst Disney sequel you`ll see. ;)

Peter Pan: Return To Neverland

I personally have never had a strong relationship to the original Peter Pan film by Disney, something I suppose is helpful when watching a sequel? That said, I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It`s faithful to the original (besides having the crocodile swapped for an octopus for some reason) and the animation is good, which in itself is a plus.
This is a proper sequel to the original. Wendy is all grown up with two children of her own, and her husband is off fighting in the war. Her daughter Jane is trying to be all grown-up and responsible, and the hard times has made her lose faith in childish stories of Peter Pan and pixie dust. One night, Captain Hook and his crew come flying in over London and kidnap Jane, believing her to be young Wendy. They take her to Neverland, intending to use her as bait to catch and kill Peter Pan, knowing he would come to her rescue.
Of course Peter saves Jane, and the film then focuses on Jane living with Peter and the Lost Boys. Jane learns to believe in magic and let go of adult responsibilities.
I personally find Jane a more complex and interesting character than Wendy, and I prefer her story to that of the Darling children. I also like that although Jane is taken to Neverland, her younger brother remains at home with their mother, allowing the movie to focus mostly on her and Peter Pan. There`s an interesting difference between Wendy and Jane: While Wendy didn`t want to grow up, Jane is trying to act mature beyond her years, dismissing childish things and silly games. I feel Jane needed or deserved the trip to Neverland more than Wendy did.
I think this film is a good continuation of the original story, and I actually prefer Return to Neverland. If you haven`t seen it, check it out!

Lilo and Stitch 2: Stitch Has A Glitch

There are actually three Lilo and Stitch sequels in total, two serving as the pilot for and the end of the TV series where the pair was working to catch all the 625 other experiments and find where they all belonged. But Lilo and Stitch 2 is a separate story from those two, and the best sequel in my opinion.
It`s more down-to-earth (pun intended) and focuses on the strains the friendship between Lilo and Stitch is put through when Stitch is experiencing a glitch that makes him go bad.
There are some poignant references to Lilo`s mother here also, as well as ties to Hawaiian religion/mythology that I personally found interesting.

The only ones I really like are tlk2 and the aladdin sequels. Granted, I stopped watching most of the disney dtv sequels after a point.

I think what makes tlk2sp so good is that the soundtrack, while not as good as the original is still pretty good. The movie has a lot of continuity errors but because of those errors it brought us kovu. He's one suave lion! His and kiaras romance is just so cute.

I haven't seen the aladdin sequels in ages but i remember liking them.

I'll re-watch Return to Neverland this week, but personally, I found the movie to be a rehash of the original film. Jane is a much more compelling character than Wendy for sure. The voice casting was also great with Corey Burton and Jeff Bennett do a spot-on imitation of Captain Hook and Mr. Smee.

The Rescuers Down Under: When it comes to Disney sequels, this is one of their best. Personally, I loved the original Rescuers although everyone else seems to look down on it. While it rehashes a few plot points from the original film, it nevertheless adds an edgier action-adventure atmosphere. A love triangle is thrown in there as well. McLeach was a well-written villain with a hoarse voice from George C. Scott, but he isn't too memorable. It just lacked the emotion and heart of the original film, but nevertheless this film is spectacular to look at with the first full use of the CAPS software.

Aladdin and the King of Thieves: While the animation was cheap and tacky, as it was in The Return of Jafar, the story was great. The plot has elements of the "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" story and has the adventure feel of the Indiana Jones films, no doubt because it was a father-son story similar to The Last Crusade, has a MacGuffin with the Hand of Midas artifact, and oddly enough, Aladdin's father, Cassim, is voiced by John Rhys-Davies, who played Salah in those films. Robin Williams, thankfully, returns as the Genie. The songs are not close to the ones featured in the original film, but "There's a Party Here in Agrabah", "Welcome to the Forty Thieves", and "In or Out" were great to listen to.

The Lion King II: Simba's Pride: I have discussed way too many times, but I'll sum my opinion. The animation quality was mediocre, and the ink artists got the colors all wrong for the original characters: Simba has a purple nose; Nala's eyes are blue instead of green; and Timon's fur looks dark. The story was basically Romeo & Juliet with a Manchurian Candidate story angle, but it was still cliché and almost predictable. Zira was a great villain voiced to perfection by the late Suzanne Pleshette. The new characters, Kovu, Vitani, and Nuka, are interesting characters. The soundtrack still retains the African sound, and I liked a few songs especially "We Are One".

Fantasia 2000: While it didn't match the precedents of the original film, this was still an enjoyable musical concert film. A few problems were that some of the musical numbers were too short and the musical hosts, like Steve Martin and Penn and Jilette, were cringe-worthy. My favorite new piece from this film was The Firebird Suite.

Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure: I loved this film mostly because of the visuals since the artists reused the original backgrounds from the original film and the character animation had fluidity, weight, and balance of movement. However, the storyline was very similar to A Bronx Tale (which also starred Chazz Palminteri, who voices Buster in this film) with the protagonist son valuing the flashy villain over his father. And the story was very predictable because we all know in the end, Scamp would return back home. Angel was a pretty great character and Alyssa Milano was a really good choice to voice her. The songs don't match to the classic standards set by the original film, but I do find a few songs like "Junkyard Society Rag" rather catchy.

The Lion King 1½: I discussed this movie so many times, but in comparison to the Disney direct-to-video sequels and midquels, this is one of Disneytoon Studios' better efforts although it never had a chance to match the original Lion King film. It was a funny, irreverent look at the original film's events with some sentimental moments of friendship thrown for good measure. The animation quality almost matches the visual of the original film, although the soundtrack was lacking with most of the music reused from the first film. As a Lion King fan, I personally did not feel it added much to the franchise although Timon's backstory was well-told but I lament at the lost opportunity to have another adventure centering around Simba and the other characters.

Bambi II: Despite the title, this is not a sequel, but a midquel taking place in the gap between the death of Bambi's mother and when Bambi becomes an adult. While it never had a chance to touch the original film, the film has a heart-warming relationship between Bambi and his father, the Great Prince of the Forest. Like Solle said, the movie is very conventional of the tropes of a contemporary animated feature with unneeded fart jokes among other things. Sir Patrick Stewart was a fantastic choice to voice Bambi's father. As for the soundtrack, I did like the songs, and I also liked one homage this film gave to the original film when Bambi and Ronno fight each other, music from their fight in the original film (where they were adults) is used.

Cinderella III: A Twist in Time: Unexpectedly, this one was one of the crown jewels of the Disney direct-to-video/DVD sequel productions. Lady Tremaine returns and steals the Fairy Godmother's magic wand to turn back time and reverse Cinderella's happily-ever-after. This movie made me hate her character even more so than the original film. Cinderella takes control of her own destiny and fights for her own happy ending. The Prince finally has some personality. The songs are not all memorable, but thanks to John Lasseter's efforts, the animation is actually pleasant enough to look at. It's a sequel that nobody ask for, but I'm happy enough that it was made.

I am probably one of the few who likes most of the Disney sequels, so this may be a long post.

One of my top favorites that I haven't seen listed here is The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea. True, it's basically just like the first movie, except Melody wants to live in the sea instead of on the land, but I love it nonetheless. The songs in this one are almost as good as the first movie's. Melody's a great character in my opinion. It's a bit ironic how Ariel turned out to be like her father in reprimanding her daughter, and I didn't like her as much in this movie as I did in the first. The animation is a little hard to look at in a few scenes, but overall I love this movie.

Another sequel I like (and I actually like this one more than the first) is Cars 2. Mater's a great character in my opinion, and the movie had a lot of action in it, which was nice. The first one is a bit slower and, to me, more boring. Although maybe I don't like the first one as much because my brothers watched it too much. :P

I suppose I should just say I like all of the Disney•Pixar sequels, because I can't think of a single one I don't like.

I like Bambi II. I haven't seen it in awhile, but I do remember especially liking the growing bond between Bambi and his father.

I also like Return to Neverland. I always liked Jane, and I can somewhat relate to her, especially with having to grow up too soon. And the scenes with
Spoiler: show
Peter being captured and Tinker Bell dying
made the movie that much better for me.

I also like:
Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure
Cinderella III: A Twist in Time
(because, like TLP said, the prince has a personality in this one)
Lion King II: Simba's Pride
Mulan II
High School Musical 2
High School Musical 3: Senior Year
Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam

I also like all of the Tinker Bell movies. I liked all of the new characters, and I liked seeing Tink be actually happy for most of the movie instead of jealous like she is in the Peter Pan movies (for the most part. My favorite sequel to these ones, though, is Secret of the Wings. I liked the sisterly bond between Tink and Periwinkle, and the movie overall was just fantastic.

There are probably more that I can't think of right now. I'll add them in if/when I do think of them.

I've actually seen almost none of the Disney sequels- I was under the impression that most of them weren't very good (coughcoughHunchbackofnotredamesequelcough). I've always wanted to at least see Return to the Sea though, and some of these others sound pretty good, so looks like I've got some watching to do!

However if Disney/Pixar sequels count for anything, I feel all the Toy Story movies have been consistently brilliant. I'd love to own them all in a box set one day.

The Rescuers Down Under, hands down. Not only was it a great film in general, it took The Rescuers and made it great. I find the original Rescuers film to be pretty bland and forgettable, but this one exceeded it in every way. It's one heck of a grand adventure, and, being a theatrical release, has absolutely stunning animation. If you watch any pure-Disney (meaning, not Pixar and not Marvel) sequel, make sure it's this one.

On the DtV side of things, The Lion King II: Simba's Pride has a lot going for it. While it is riddled with plotholes, it introduces a lot of memorable new characters and includes a good set of original songs. There's also some respectable cleverness to having Simba continue to struggle here and there, rather than him being a perfect king. The animation, while it does cut a lot of corners, is also pretty good by DtV standards. Overall, it's a pretty strong follow-up to TLK. Not as strong as a follow-up to TLK could be, mind you, but still.

The Lion King 1 1/2: Hakuna Matata is noteworthy for having probably the best animation quality of any DtV Disney sequel. While a weaker follow-up to TLK story-wise, it does offer some great exploration of Timon's character, and is very humorous. Teen Simba scenes are icing on the cake.

Aladdin and the King of Thieves, while having poor animation quality, has a great adventure story and great songs.

Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure is quite heartwarming at times, and has great songs. Animation quality is quite good as well.

On the Pixar side of things, the sequels I've seen have been great, those being Toy Story 2 and Finding Dory. I've heard great things about Toy Story 3 as well, so I'm sure that one's great as well. I couldn't care less about Cars 2, though.

Even the worst MCU films are still pretty good imo, though the Captain America films stand out as some of the best of the bunch, so if you're wanting to get into the MCU but don't want to watch every film, I'd go with those.

Cinderella III is surprisingly good! :D I can recommend that too!

While they`re not my top favourites, I also enjoyed The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea and Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp`s Adventure.

my fav is Simbas Pride
they introduced 5 new lions: Vitani Zira Nuka Kovu and Kiara offcourse. The songs in the movie are great and they get to give that TLK athmosphere a new life. I watched it many times.

Then there is Lady and the Tramp 2
Loved the dog characters and, yay, songs! the animation and the message was strong in this one and I watched it 2 times.

Bambi ll is my 3rd favorite. loved Ronno and it had fun jokes but also serious matter in it. The animation was wonderfull and they made a masterpiece I believe.

Fox and the Hound 2 i watched this movie yesterday and liked it. 2nd time i watched it.

Finding doey and toy storie 2 and 3 are fun too...but I prefer the animations that look hand drawn (tekenfilm is our language word for it i dont know it in english)

Recently watched Bambi II. You know, most of the time, I don't like midquels. They usually don't add anything of substance to the original story and end up detracting from it if anything. But Bambi II actually felt like it had a reason to exist and shared a lot of the original's heartwarming charm. This is one midquel you won't regret checking out.
