She stumbled away, letting out a sharp gasp at the burning pain on her foreleg. Blood dripped down the scruffy grey fur, splattering on the stony ground. The cub whimpered involuntarily as she sat down with a thump and turned to lick the fresh scratch. Behind her, Ubati snarled and whined. The uneven thumps of her mother's pawsteps echoed over the rocks. She was in a fit again.
Kaharabu finished cleaning her wound and nervously glanced around. Her mother was wandering unsteadily a few paces away, now mumbling to herself. She was heading down a slope, and within a few moments she had disappeared. The cub stared after her. The cry of a bird of prey startled her, and she jumped up and scampered after the lioness. She caught up to Ubati and trailed after the half-mad creature, who didn't even notice her cub.
